SPT 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Review

With the extreme heat wave that has hit Kansas for the past xx days, we opted to buy a SPT 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner through Wal-Mart.com.

While reading the specifications of all the portable air conditioner units on Wal-Mart’s website, we found the SPT 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner to be one of the higher quality ones for the price of $434. There were a few higher priced ones and some lower priced ones on their air conditioner section.

We placed our order for the SPT 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner through the Wal-Mart website and had it shipped to our home. We did this because it would have been 12 days before it would have been shipped to a Wal-Mart near us.

The disadvantage is we ordered the portable AC on a Saturday and it wasn’t shipped until Monday. We had it shipped directly to our home with the one day shipping option for $29.95.

We received it on Tuesday morning seven hours earlier than the projected arrival time. That was a perk for the company and Fed-Ex to get it to us that quickly once the order was initiated and received by SPT.

This was something that was a regular feature that takes place whenever we have a new air conditioner in the house but this time the delivery was made much earlier than the last time when the latest blaux portable ac model was doing the rounds and was the most popular brand of all for its time.

Preparations for Hooking Up the SPT 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner

Once my husband read the instructions, he found it had to sit for two hours before hook up. That wasn’t bad considering the time it arrived because it would be ready to hook up before the temperatures outside warmed our house.

After he finished reading the instructions, I turned off the breaker for our dining room so we could check out the electrical sockets to see what else was on the circuit. We found it was just the dining room and the back deck light. This was a bonus because that meant he wouldn’t have to have any rewiring done for the circuit to hold the portable AC wattage.

He checked to see if he would have to change it out with the one he bought for the plug and found out he wouldn’t have to do this step. He did have to cut a hole into the side of the house to vent the hot air out into the garage. That was the hardest part for installing the portable SPT Air Conditioner.

He did have to attach the vent hose to the portable AC unit and the exhaust hose insert to the wall. That took a few minutes for him to do because both ends had to screw onto the hose.

There is an option to drain the SPT 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner as it cools or to drain it when the water retainer fills. My husband thought about running a hose from the portable AC unit through the floor where the sump pump is basement.

He decided to wait and see how fast the water retainer filled up before going that route. As of three days, we haven’t had to empty the AC unit because it hasn’t automatically shut off.

What Does the SPT 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Come With?

The SPT 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner comes with a remote control, wheels for easy moving, plastic heating tube, wall tube mounting with cover, window venting plates, plastic water drainage tube, and programmable keyboard with house temperature and cooling setting readouts.

We left the settings for the portable air conditioner at the factory settings. The cooling temperature was set at 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

The reading for the room temperature remains viewable at all times. Our house temperature remains around 83 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The house temperature does start to drop as the sun sets and the air outside begins to cool. One thing we did notice is when we open the outside door the house temperature may rise a degree or two.

How Well Does the SPT 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Cool?

The specifications for the SPT 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner says it will cool up to 400 square feet. For our house, it keeps our 144 square foot dining room as cool as an air conditioner should. It also cools off a 270 square foot bedroom. The total is 414 square feet if I calculated correctly.

Conclusion

Our overall satisfaction with the SPT 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner is a 10 our of 10. We are considering ordering another one of these units for the living room. I would recommend this portable air conditioner.
